Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular plastic surgeries and it can make a dramatic change in your appearance.* Basically this surgery involves reshaping the contours of the nose to give it a better shape.* Many people have a mental picture of the “perfect nose” and nose surgery can go a long way towards giving you the nose of your dreams! Of course, this surgery can also be combined with corrective surgery to correct various structural defects, such as a deviated septum, or other medical conditions that may cause certain breathing problems.*
In fact, if you require corrective surgery for a medical problem, it could be a great chance for you to reshape your nose at the same time. A nose job, as this procedure is popularly known, is basically an effective and time-tested cosmetic solution. When it is carried out by a skilled cosmetic surgeon, a rhinoplasty can greatly improve the balance of your facial features, thus helping you to discover newfound confidence. Patients who have been self-conscious about their noses can be filled with a new sense of satisfaction and pride in their appearance.*
The nose correction surgery procedure may be of various types. Reduction rhinoplasty is one of the commonest types of nose reshaping surgery and can give a patient a nose that is more proportionate to other facial features. Augmentation rhinoplasty is another popular type of nose reshaping surgery and is intended to build up the nasal bridge and/or tip. Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is used in casesof accident and also when the patient has suffered an injury to the nose. It can also be carried out to straighten the nose and correct the nasal septum. Reconstructive rhinoplasty is required in the case of patients who may have lost all or part of their noses to an accident, skin cancer, or some other serious illness.
In all the above types of surgery, the surgeon will use specialized instruments to either remove excess bone, skin and tissue; or he will graft the tissue as required to reshape the nose. The procedure requires local anesthesia with either local sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your surgeon’s preferences.
Do remember however, that going to your Rhinoplasty Surgeon with a picture of your favorite actor, and requesting that he make you look “just like that” is not a realistic goal. If you have realistic expectations you will experience a greater sense of satisfaction and your rhinoplasty will fill you with a new-found sense of confidence and pride in your new look!*
Details
At the thought of undergoing any surgery, most people feel quite hesitant. But, let us emphasize here that although Rhinoplasty is a complex and delicate procedure, the entire operation is nowadays a routine one, and is absolutely safe. In fact, this procedure is one of the earliest cosmetic surgeries to be carried out on a fairly routine basis. Even a small change in the shape and size of your nose can make a really dramatic change in your overall appearance and thus give a huge boost to your self-confidence.
If you have all the information required, you will be ready to go in for this procedure without any unnecessary fears or concerns.
As with all procedures, Rhinoplasty should begin with a visit to the cosmetic surgeon to assess your suitability for the procedure. You need to be in fairly good health, and also, importantly, you need to have realistic expectations.
There are a number of different types of Nose Reshaping procedures, and it is essential that you seek out a reputable and experienced Rhinoplasty Surgeon in your Area, who can discuss your preferences and expectations and suggest the procedure that will give you the nose of your dreams! Nowadays, doctors often use advanced computer programs to help plan the rhinoplasty and simulate the appearance of your nose after the surgery.
Reduction rhinoplasty is one of the commonest types of nose surgery and can give a patient a nose that is more proportionate to their other facial features. Your surgeon can deal with a hooked nose, unsightly bumps on the bridge of your nose, an elongated nasal tip, excessively wide and flaring nostrils, and other such features that displease you. The doctor will remove small amounts of bone or cartilage to achieve the desired results.
Augmentation rhinoplasty is another popular type of nose reshaping surgery. This type of nose correctionis intended to build up the nasal bridge and/or tip. Your doctor will perform a bone or tissue graft. He or she may use cartilage from other parts of the nose, usually the nasal septum, or may use cartilage from other areas, rib bone, or even synthetic material.
Post-traumatic rhinoplasty is performed in cases of accident and also when the patient has suffered an injury to the nose, such as a broken nose. It can also be carried out to straighten the nose and correct a deviated nasal septum.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty is performed in the case of patients who may have lost all or part of their noses to accidents, skin cancer, or some other serious illness. Your surgeon will rebuild the nose using a skin graft, “flap techniques”, or other methods. Patients may need many surgeries over a long period, as this is a delicate and complex process.
There are basically two techniques for performing nose surgery.
Closed rhinoplasty is usually the preferred procedure as the surgical incisions are made inside the nose, to eliminate external scarring.
Open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon easier access to the nasal cartilage and bone but it may leave some scars, particularly on the underside of the nose. Your surgeon will make an incision across the area of cartilage between the two nostrils and lift the skin off the tip of the nose. This will allow the cartilage to be shaped very precisely.
Most people who go in for a nose job report a high level of satisfaction with the procedure and an increase in self confidence. It is not surprising that cosmetic nose surgery is one of the most commonly performed and successful procedures!
FAQs
When you are going in for any type of cosmetic procedure, your mind is naturally filled with a number of questions. Here are the replies to many of the most commonly asked questions, so that your mind is at ease when you go in for the procedure.
What Exactly Is Cosmetic nose surgery?
Nose reshaping surgeryis a procedure that is usually not required medically – it is carried out mainly to change the shape or look of your nose, to improve your appearance and give you a nose that fits with your image of yourself. It involves reshaping and remodeling the nose so that you have the nose of your dreams, which will give your self-confidence a major boost! It may also be carried out to improve the functioning of the nose, due to trauma or birth defects.
Am I a good candidate for Nose Surgery?
If you are a reasonably fit and healthy person, you should be a suitable candidate. Your physician will be the one to give you the go-ahead for the surgery, especially as it involves sedation or general anesthesia. You should also have realistic expectations. A nose job will certainly improve your looks and bring them into line with your self-image; but you should not expect it to miraculously change your life.
What Does Nose Reshaping involve?
A Rhinoplasty often involves changing and restructuring the nose by Reduction Rhinoplasty, i.e. elimination of unsightly bumps, hooks, etc. in which the doctor will remove small amounts of bone or cartilage to achieve the desired shape. Alternatively, you may require Augmentation Rhinoplasty in which bone, tissue or synthetic graft s are used to build up the nose to the desired shape.
What types of Nose Correction procedures are available to me?
You may opt to go in for Closed rhinoplasty, which is usually preferred; as the surgical incisions are made inside the nostrils. This eliminates external scarring. Alternatively, you may select Open rhinoplasty which gives the surgeon easier access to the nasal cartilage and bone – however it may leave some scars, particularly on the underside of the nose.
How long will the surgery last?
The surgery usually lasts no more than two hours, and you may be given either local or, more usually, general anesthesia. You can generally return home on the same day.
Will the scars be visible later?
In the case of Closed Rhinoplasty there will be no visible scars. In the case of Open Rhinoplasty there will be small and almost invisible scars at the base of the nostrils.
What are the after – effects of the procedure?
After the procedure, you must follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully.
He or she will prescribe any pain medication you may require. You should expect some discomfort during the period immediately after surgery.
Normally there will be a splint taped in place to support the nose and maintain its new shape. There will also be some “packing”, i.e. pieces of gauze, placed inside the nostrils. Both the splint and the packing are usually removed after seven to 10 days.
Swelling and discoloration of the face and the area around the eyes is normal, and should subside in two to three weeks. It may however take about two months for the swelling to disappear completely.
How much will the treatment Cost?
The cost for this treatment varies from surgeon to surgeon and clinic to clinic. Look for a reputed and experienced Rhinoplasty Surgeon in your area. Do not forget that, as for any delicate and complicated procedure, it is worthwhile to pay a little bit more to get the best treatment possible.
Precaution
Before you decide to go in for a cosmetic nose surgery, you must make sure that you consult a qualified and experienced rhinoplasty surgeon in your area. Your doctor will be able to discuss the procedure with you, and can even use a computer simulation to show you what your nose will look like after the procedure. He should also discuss your goals and your expectations from this surgery.
Contra-Indications
Your surgeon will take your medical history and carefully assess your general health, carrying out any medical tests that may be required. There are certain conditions which may serve as contra-indications, e.g. if you have any bleeding disorder, like hemophilia, you may not be a suitable candidate. A history of thyroid problems, hypertension or diabetes should also be taken into account by your surgeon. If you have any of these conditions, or any other health problem, your surgeon will decide whether you are a suitable candidate. Also, if you are a smoker, you may be asked to quit for at least a few weeks prior to the surgery.
Pre Surgery Precautions:-
Your doctor should discuss the forehead lift procedure with you and explain the precautions that you need to take before the surgery.
- You will be instructed to stop smoking in the weeks before and after the nose surgery.
- You will need to stop taking any medications that could thin your blood and prevent it from clotting normally. This includes various pain relievers, like aspirin and ibuprofen. You will probably need to stop taking these medications one to two weeks in advance, to reduce the possibility of excess bleeding during the procedure.
- Some surgeons may ask you to avoid certain foods and supplements, which could slow the healing process and possibly cause surgical complications. In particular, patients should avoid vitamin E supplements, gingko, ginger, and ginseng.
- You may also be asked to avoid consuming alcohol in the weeks before the surgery as alcohol may affect the liver’s ability to metabolize correctly.
- You should eat only a light meal e.g. soup, the night before your surgery.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
- On the day of your surgery, you should take any essential medications that you normally take, e.g. for blood pressure, with just a small sip of water.
- Avoid applying any kind of makeup on the day of surgery.
- Ensure that someone is available to transport you home and look after you during the first several hours after you are released following surgery.
You should study the doctor’s instructions carefully and be sure that you follow his directions.
Post Surgery Precautions:-
After the nose correction surgery is completed, and the incisions made during surgery have been closed, your surgeon will usually place a splint at the site, to help retain the new shape of the nose. It is usually retained for about a week.
Sometimes, he or she may also place pieces of gauze, also called nasal packing, inside the nostrils. This packing is usually removed after a few days, and helps in maintaining the results of surgery, i.e. the desired shape of the “nose job”.
After the surgery you should rest in bed with your head raised, to reduce any possible bleeding and swelling. Your nose may be congested because of the swelling, or due to the splints placed inside. Normally the internal dressings remain in the area for up to a week after the surgery. Some bleeding and drainage of mucus and old blood are usually seen for a few days after the surgery and also after removing the dressing. Your doctor may place a “drip pad”, which is a small piece of gauze held in place with tape, under your nose to absorb drainage. Keep changing the gauze as directed by your doctor, and don’t press it tightly against your nose.
To further decrease the chances of bleeding and swelling, you should:-
- Avoid strenuous activities such as working out or jogging.
- Take a bath instead of a shower while you have a bandage on your nose.
- Don’t blow your nose.
- Keep your face immobile as far as possible, and try not to smile widely or laugh.
- Avoid constipation, which can cause you to strain, and thus put pressure on the surgery area.
- Brush your teeth gently to limit movement of your upper lip.
- Wear clothes with buttons and don’t pull clothes like sweaters or shirts, over your head.
- Don’t wear eyeglasses or sunglasses for at least a month after the surgery, to avoid pressure on your nose.
- Use SPF 30 or above sunscreen when you go outside, particularly on your nose, as the sun may cause permanent discoloration of the skin of your nose.
Possible Complications of Rhinoplasty
Swelling or discoloration of your eyelids can occur for up to a month after nasal surgery. Swelling of the nose may take a long time to subside.
Rhinoplasty, like any other major surgery, carries risks such as infection, excessive bleeding, or a bad reaction to the anesthesia.
Other possible risks specific to rhinoplasty include:
- Recurring nosebleeds
- Possibility of an uneven-looking nose
- Persistent pain, discoloration or swelling
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Permanent numbness of the area around the nose
- Visible scarring
- A hole in the septum
However, in most cases where the procedure is efficiently carried out by a qualified surgeon, patients do not report any complications; making rhinoplasty one of the most popular and satisfying cosmetic procedures.
