Medical science supports the use of platelet rich plasma or the augmentation as well as regeneration of soft and hard tissues. Platelet rich plasma is the source of concentrated platelet content, which is present within blood. Since plasma (autologous) is utilized, there is absolutely no danger of transmission of any diseases. Platelet transfusion is a very common practice used for treating blood platelet disorders, which includes very low counts associated with bleeding. The platelets as well as white blood cells have a synergistic effect, thus resulting in the release of an array of growth factors on the injection sites. This promotes collagen production and hyaluronic acid, as well as wound healing, thus resulting in the improvement of symptoms like wrinkles and acne marks.
PRP Skin Rejuvenation Treatment:
PRP or Platelet-Rich Plasma has been used in aesthetic medicine in order to rejuvenate as well as slow down the process of ageing on the face. You can now have PRP skin rejuvenation treatment done in order to use the body's natural healing potential and also for stimulating natural skin rejuvenation without using chemicals. This treatment has thickening and tightening effects on the skin and offers a youthful glow to the skin. During treatment, the doctor will take some of your blood and centrifuge it along with a special gel that separates platelet rich plasma and the red cells. After this, the platelet rich plasma is drawn off by adding an anticoagulant compound in order to ensure that it does not clot before the injecting is over. After application of a numbing gel or cream onto the face and neck, a lot of small injections are made all over the area that needs to be treated. The result from this treatment is massively improved skin tone, reduction in lines, reduction in pore size and elimination of the crepe effect on the skin.
PRP Treatment for Hair Loss:
After performing hundreds of platelet rich plasma treatments for the skin, doctors observed thin and short hair growth near the treated skin. This hair grew thicker and taller as compared to the hair, which grew farther away from treated area. Doctors found this to be intriguing and looked further into how platelet rich plasma could be used to help people who are experiencing hair loss.
After taking a small quantity of blood from the patient in order to produce hair follicle stimulating PRP (plasma rich platelet), the scalp is prepped using thorough cleansing. Following this, calcium activated platelet rich plasma is injected through a syringe and applied topically using a dermaroller. The dermaroller creates microscopic channels, which allow PRP to penetrate deeper into the scalp skin, where it stimulates the growth of new hair follicles as well as creates new blood vessels. A majority of the patients report minimal or no discomfort during the treatment and there is no down time associated with the procedure.
First Appointment :
During your first appointment, the doctor will take a detailed clinical history of any injury and other medical conditions that may be relevant. This is followed by a thorough physical examination. The doctor will check to see if the patient has recently used any NSAID’s (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Mobic, Nurofen, and Voltaren. NSAID’s are known to interfere with the platelet produced by the bone marrow and therefore should be stopped ten days prior to the treatment.
Blood is collected through venesection, the same procedure which is used in blood donations and blood tests. Usually, the site of the venesection is a large vein in the elbow. Around 20ml of blood may be collected.
After the blood is collected, it is spun down in a centrifuge so that the components are separated. This process takes about 15 minutes. Following this, the platelet rich plasma is harvested using different ways. Some of these methods make use of commercially available kits that could add to the cost. Depending upon the area of treatment, around 2 to 8ml of platelet rich plasma will be extracted from the centrifuged blood.
Platelet rich plasma will then be injected into the area of treatment. It takes around 30 to 40 minutes from the collection of blood to the injection.
How It Works
- PRP or platelet rich plasma injections were first used in the year 1987 in open heart surgery. These days, platelet rich plasma injections are being safely used in a lot of fields, which include cosmetics, sports medicine, orthopaedics, urology and fasciomaxillary. The blood contains white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Platelets can be described as small discoid cells that have a life span of around 7 to 10 days. The platelets contain granules that contain clotting as well as growth factors. During the process of healing, these platelets get activated and collect together. After this they release the granules that contain growth factors, thus stimulating the inflammatory cascade as well as healing process.
Platelet rich plasma treatment for skin rejuvenation is expected to provide excellent results for crepy skin under the eyes, which is difficult to treat using laser therapy and conventional rejuvenating injections. The treatment uses the patient's own blood and therefore poses no risk of any kind of allergy or infections. It holds an advantage of a longer duration of efficacy as compared to injection of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which are absorbed into the body. The other features like no skin incision and minimum downtime (swelling generally resolves in 2 to 3 hours) make this treatment safe. Furthermore, cell therapy is unique as it relies upon the body’s own cells for hair growth. The human body fights against diseases and repairs the damage caused to the organs, which includes the skin cells that grow hair, making use of a distinctive cell type known as stem cells. These cells are quite powerful because when they divide, like all the cells in the body, they make an exact copy of themselves and are able to produce the cell type which is needed by every or all parts of the body. Even if the follicle cells on the scalp are dying, these stem cells provide a solution and provide a perfect replacement. These cells not only provide rejuvenation of the scalp, they also infinitely replicate as well as perpetuate growth.
Latest research in stem cell therapy has discovered that stem cells are the future of hair growth treatments. Some internationally published results demonstrate that stem cell therapy can be extremely effective in hair growth, even in patients who have dealt with hair loss for many years. There is hope for people who are struggling with thinning of the hair or pattern baldness. However, the time to act is now. The sooner you start with hair replacement therapy, the more effective will it prove in stimulating the growth of new cells, new hair and a new found confidence.
Is the platelet rich plasma injection safe?
Platelet rich plasma has been used in different fields of medicine for over twenty years. These fields include cardiac surgery, sports medicine, oral surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, dentistry, periodontal implants, general surgery, wound care and cosmetics. Research and clinical data demonstrate that platelet rich plasma, which is derived from the patient's own blood is very safe and involves minimum risk of any complications or adverse reactions. Since the platelets are produced from the patient’s own blood, there isn’t any risk of rejection or transmission of any disease. However, similar to any other injection used for the body, there is a marginal risk of infection, this is however very rare.
When are the results visible?
The results are not instant. Patients will initially notice some swelling due to the fluid and once this swelling has subsided, they will not see much at all. However, over a few weeks the platelets stimulate the growth factors which would help in the growth of more collagen. Over the ensuing months, patients will notice an improvement in skin texture and tone.
Will I require frequent touch ups?
Depending upon the health as well as age of the skin, patients usually require about 3 treatments, which are spaced 4 - 6 weeks apart. Patients will require touch up treatments in order to maintain the results, and although the results vary, most results last for upto 18 months.
How Long Does a Treatment Session Normally Take?
It requires around 30 to 40 minutes from collection of blood to injection. Patients mostly require 3 treatment sessions spread across 6 weeks.
Does the Treatment Hurt?
A majority of the patients report minimal or no discomfort experienced during the treatment and there is no down time associated with the procedure. Patients can resume their routine activities immediately, however, the skin or scalp must be protected from excessive exposure to sun.
Most common conditions for platelet rich plasma therapy include fine wrinkles around the eyes, hair loss, nasolabial grooves, acne marks, wrinkles on the lips, wrinkles on the neck, wrinkles on the forehead, loose and saggy skin, as well as bags and dark circles under the eyes.
Patients should not use PRP injection therapy if they have:
Cancer or metastatic disease, low platelet count, or an active infection. You must not use PRP injection if you are breastfeeding or are pregnant. You must not use a PRP injection if you have used NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Voltaren, Nurofen, or Mobic in 7 to 10 days before your appointment. In case you are considering using this injection, switch to another painkiller like paracetamol or other options which you can check with the local doctor or chemist. Also, it is important to inform the doctor if you have an allergy to medical equipment or medicines, particularly with regards to local anaesthetics.

- What people say about Platelet Rich Plasma for Skin Rejuvenation, Hair Loss, Acne Marks
- Jessica Fisher says:
PRP skin rejuvenation has really helped improve the texture of my skin. I had fine lines and wrinkles on my face, which have now almost disappeared. The treatment itself takes around an hour, but I had to go for 3 to 4 appointments which were spaced across 1 month. I cannot express how pleased I am with the results from the treatment. Personally, I recommend this treatment.
- Jessica Fisher says:
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps give phenomenal antiageing results, especially when it comes to removing wrinkles, stopping hair loss and getting rid of acne scars and stretch marks. While Platelet Rich Plasma has been in use for several types of medical procedures for many years now but it is being used for skin rejuvenation in several countries from 2006.
Platelet rich plasma treatments are very popular for the following results:
- Visible Skin texture improvement
- Noticeable skin tone improvement
- Disappearance of crinkles around the eyes
- Reduction in wrinkles on the cheeks, face, neck and jawline
- Stimulation of hair growth on the scalp
- Reduction in other signs of ageing such as dark spots, pigmentation and skind dehydration
Platelet rick plasma technology is greatly useful in accelaerating the internal process of soft tissue healing, a process that shows the skin rejuvenation results that one can see post the treatment. As the plasma is harvested from one's own body, there are no allergic reactions nor are there any fears of blood transfusion related diseases. The treatment involves injections and hence is not completely non-invasive.
It takes a session of about 45 to 60 minutes to complete two tubes of plasma infusion. You may need at least 3 treatments to see noticeable skin improvements and each treatment session needs to be spaced out with a gap of 4 to 6 weeks. You can continue treatments till about 24 months after which you may need to take a healing break. As complete collagen regeneration requires about 3 months, you may notice all the phenomenal results only after 3 months have passed.
Platelet Rich Plasma treatments or PRP can be used by just about anybody as its results do not vary according to skin type, color and texture. If you accompany these treatment sessions with the right skin care and a few other normal therapies, you would be surprised at the drastically imporved results. While this treatment is completely safe, it is worth noting that results are not visible immediately after a session and will take a few weeks to show themselves. Though repeated and periodic touch up treatments may be required, it is safe to say that most patients see PRP results that can last to 18 months.
The PRP Procedure
- After a pre-treatment analysis, your doctor will recommend you the treatment, its expected outcomes and the procedure.
- To begin with, once the skin on the arm has been throughly cleaned, anesthtic cream is applied to the area, to prevent paina nd discomfort. Blood is then taken from the arm and it is then centrifuged in a test tube to separate the plasma.
- This activated plasma is then injected in areas where there are obvious and visible wrinkles and fine lines. The remaining plasma is them injected in the surrounding area.
- After this procedure, the doctor may apply a dermal roller treatment to ensure that maximum plasma gets into the skin.
- Lastly, the doctor applies a collagen mask to protect the skin and speed up recovery.
PRP skin rejuvenation treatments are contraidicated in some patients, such as those who smoke heavily or those who have other underlying medical conditions (especially those that eprtain to blood or plasma). Please talk to your doctor in detail about them before you commence therapy.
Certain temporary side effects such as redness and swelling may be observed after your treatment session but these subside quickly. It is only after this swelling subsides that your internal healing actually begins. So expect some time to go by in the healing process before you can actually witness the results of your PRP Plasma lift treatment.
