Hair loss has always been a common problem among a majority of people world over. Men in particular are afraid of going completely bald after they start noticing a receding hairline. They try to prevent hair loss by using various treatment alternatives. Common baldness treatment alternatives include natural remedies, medication and technological treatments. They are willing to pay any price to cure this problem and avoid partial or permanent baldness.
Hair transplantation is a breakthrough procedure in the field of hair restoration. The procedure involves either the use of medications to restore hair growth or removal and transplanting of hair from another part of the scalp. Hair transplantation can provide significant benefits for men dealing with male pattern baldness as well as androgenetic alopecia, the most common causes for hair loss in men. An increasing number of women are also opting for this procedure, although they generally suffer from hair thinning and baldness is quite rare.
Two of the most recent advancements in baldness treatment are FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). The follicular unit therapy involves 2 ways of hair extraction, FUT or Strip method and FUE. In the STRIP method, a strip of skin from the donor area (back of head) is removed using a scalpel and the gap at the back of head is sutured together. Following this, the strip is divided into grafts that contain one, two or three hair follicles to be inserted into the bald patch.
Follicular Unit Extraction:
Follicular unit extraction or FUE involves extracting hair follicles from the donor site, using a tiny punch. These fossils are inserted into the balding or thinning patch using a micro blade. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and does not involve stitches. FUE baldness treatment is performed by a surgeon and not technicians. Usually, 500-3,000 grafts are transplanted per day, which is equivalent to around 1,000 to 6,000 hairs. The results look very natural and the regrowth of hair is stronger and healthier.
FUE hair transplant procedure requires just a single session, which lasts for a few hours. However, if someone has lost a lot of hair, it can take more than one session. After the graft is completed, the wounds heal in about 7-10 days. It is very important to take care of the scalp following the procedure. Keeping the head clean and massaging it on a regular basis is required to increase blood circulation to the scalp. Most patients don’t experience any pain or discomfort during or after the procedure. Patients are also administered medication after the treatment, but this is rarely necessary.
Advantages of FUE Hair Transplant:
- A minimally invasive procedure that does not involve scalpels, stitches, or bandaging.
- Provides natural looking results.
- The donor follicles can be taken from anywhere on the scalp and not confined only to the mid-back portion of the head.
- No risk of scarring on the donor area.
- Eligibility requirements like age, thickness of hair and skin type are not much of a problem.
FUE baldness treatment offers significant advantages in terms of pain reduction, down time as well as desirable results. The method is not restrictive and anyone can go through the procedure as long as there is no pre-existing medical disorder that might conflict with it.
