Botulinum Toxin is a material that can be administered either into a face muscle to prevent the development of premature wrinkles or in to the sweat glands in order to control excessive sweating.* Botulinum toxin has been known for over a century and it has been used for medical purposes for over 50 years.
The initial use of Botulinum was for strabismus, cervical dystonia (wry neck) and blepharospasm (the inability to move the eyes in certain ways). In the year 2002, Botulinum toxin was approved for improving frown lines in the area between the eyes and on the forehead, and has been used very successfully on more than half a million patients ever since that time.* The Botulinum toxin injection contains an active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. This isa toxin that is produced by a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum.
The Botulinum toxin type A is a bacterial toxin, which prevents the nerves from functioning in a normal way. It prevents the nerves from releasing a chemical known as acetylcholine, which is important for the nerves to be able to communicate with the muscle cells. Consequently, this toxin does not allow the muscles to receive any kind of nerve stimulation and this lack of nerve stimulation causes the muscles to turn paralyzed. Botulinum toxin type A results in muscle paralysis until the nerves develop brand new endings in order to communicate with the muscles.
How It Works?
On the Dayof Treatment:
Prior to injecting Botulinum toxin, any type of make-up will be removed, followed by disinfection of the skin. The practitioner will then study the patient’s facial muscles in order to see how they work, since individuals could differ. The injections are painless, however, a local anaesthetic cream can be applied prior to the procedure. In order to treat frown lines, botulinum toxin is injected using a fine needle above as well as in between the eyebrows. The treatment session would last for around 15 minutes and patients can resume their routine activities almost immediately after treatment.* The practitioner will provide patients with guidelines regarding looking after the skin following treatment.
The Botulinum toxin injections take an average of 2 -3 days to start working, but it might take a little longer in order to notice full effects.* The speed of action would depend upon the strength of the facial muscles as well as a patient’s response to the injection. Botulinum injections can reduce the severity of glabellar lines for upto four months and patients will be satisfied with the effects of botulinum toxin treatment.*
Botulinum toxin injections are injected into the muscle above as well as between the eyebrows in order to temporarily paralyse and relax the muscles. It is used to improve the appearance of vertical frown lines in between the eyebrows.* The injections result in an improvement, which can be noticed after 2 – 3 days following treatment. The effect of these injections lasts for around 4 months. In order to achieve continued effects, patients would need to continue taking these injections every 3 – 4 months.*
Botulinum toxin injections are used for treating aesthetic conditions that normally come about with the process of ageing. The glabellar muscles present in the forehead often develop folds or “frown lines” above the eyebrows as well as directly above the bridge of the nose. These injections help reduce and even remove these fine lines and wrinkles temporarily. The results from this treatment have been typically known to last between 3 – 6 months. Along with repeated treatments, atrophy or thinning of the muscles might occur, which produces longer-lasting effects. Excessive sweating can also be alleviated using Botulinum toxin injections in a highly diluted form directly into underarm skin as well as on the skin on the soles or palms of the foot and hand. The injection paralyzes the sweat glands in the skin, which are responsible for excessive sweating. Just a single treatment session is able to provide several months of relief. Furthermore, expert’s state that these injections can be continued to be used indefinitely either once or twice in a year, in order to control excessive perspiration and maintain dryness.
