The initial use of Botulinum was for strabismus, cervical dystonia (wry neck) and blepharospasm (the inability to move the eyes in certain ways). In the year 2002, Botulinum toxin was approved for improving frown lines in the area between the eyes and on the forehead, and has been used very successfully on more than half a million patients ever since that time.* The Botulinum toxin injection contains an active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. This isa toxin that is produced by a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum.

The Botulinum toxin type A is a bacterial toxin, which prevents the nerves from functioning in a normal way. It prevents the nerves from releasing a chemical known as acetylcholine, which is important for the nerves to be able to communicate with the muscle cells. Consequently, this toxin does not allow the muscles to receive any kind of nerve stimulation and this lack of nerve stimulation causes the muscles to turn paralyzed. Botulinum toxin type A results in muscle paralysis until the nerves develop brand new endings in order to communicate with the muscles.
